Director Priyadarshan is on a high as his Mohanlal-starrer Oppam has turned out to be the Onam winner at the box-office. The film maker who has made us laugh and cry with his amazing movies like Kilukam and Chithram is happy that people have once again accepted him. However, his personal life has been much in speculation, after his wife of 24 years Lissy ended her marriage with him recently. The Oppam director talks to Vanitha on how he took a break from work with regard to personal issues and managed to return with a bang:
''Lal (Mohanlal) and me never really bothered about success or failures in industry. But there came a time when success became a matter of question for our survival. When I realized that our family life has been ruined, I was kind of destroyed. Once during divorce session in court Lissy said 'Director Priayadarshan's good times is over', I couldn't hold back my tears. When someone very close to you says something really rude to you, it's totally hard to cope up. I was almost into depression since then. I had to undergo treatment for about four months and took medication as well. Very lately, I somehow decided to bring myself back and made up my mind to face whatever comes. I did all sorts of things that could make me distracted- watched movies continuously, read books and gradually came back. ''
Talking about Mohanlal's support as a close buddy, Priyadarshan said, ''When I was depressed, it was Lal who rang me up and told me to do something and make a film otherwise the way I was looking at life won't really work out. Back then, all I could tell him was that I was not interested in making a movie at that point of time. I told him it's wrong time for me and whatever I do won't turn out good. After hearing my words, Lal became sad. He did his best to cheer me up. He was the one who later sent the story writer of Oppam to me. When I pointed out that there were many logical problems in the story, Lal asked me to rework on it and write the screenplay. And thus I took up the project.''
An ardent devotee and true to his spiritual self, Priyan asks why blame God for one's troubles. ''I have achieved in life whatever I wanted to. I was born into a lower middle class family and it was my parents who gave me the values of religious beliefs. I firmly trust that whatever success I have made in my life is because of the grace of god. God gives us trouble to open our eyes and see yet another world. That's the time when you realize your mistakes. Everything is god's decision and I hope I can make him happy.''
