When doctor couple Jithu and Prajisha decided to build their dream dwelling in a 12 cents plot in Pavangad, right in the middle of the Kozhikode city, Kerala, they were faced with quite a few challenges. They had envisioned their abode to be a calm and serene spot where the noise and pollution of the urban hub wouldn’t enter. For them, their home was also the place where they could relax and unwind after a day of hard work and stress. This beautiful house, which features the perfect blend of traditional and modern styles, is surrounded with lush greenery and has all the facilities.
The harsh sights of the city are blocked by the thick foliage of the beautiful trees and plants that adorn the front yard of this house. Natural greenery, on all four sides of the house, acts as a protective blanket against pollution as well.
The terracotta tiles paved on the roof add a rustic charm to the exteriors. Meanwhile, the exposed brick work instantly draws the attention. This design feature could be spotted not just on the elevation but in the interiors and on the boundary walls as well.
Designed in 3250 sq ft area, this charming house has a car porch, sit out, formal and family living areas, dining hall, four bedrooms, and entertainment space and a balcony. The custom made furniture is elegant and goes well with the general theme of the house. The upholstery on the couch, the curtains and the rugs are all done in ethnic handloom fabric. Vitrified tiles in rustic finish are paved on the floor. The scrap wood has been used for panelling and as designer strips in the interiors. This made sure that there was absolutely no wastage.
The interiors are designed in the open theme without any unnecessary walls that separate the spaces. Most of the windows and the doors in this house open to the enchanting beauty of nature outside. Besides, these huge windows bring lots of natural sunshine and cool breeze into the house. One could enter the patio which has greenery around from the dining space.
The sitting areas in the upper storey are almost like small patches of greenery inside the house. These areas are arranged to host small parties or get together. The family says that most guests prefer relaxing at these beautiful spots, where nature plays the perfect host, than the formal living area.
The uniquely designed bedrooms in this house open to the mesmerizing nature outside. These bath-attached bedrooms have full length wardrobes for storage. A small green courtyard is what makes the bathroom in the master bedroom stand out. This bathroom is designed by separating the dry and the wet areas.
The cupboards in the kitchen are made in plywood – veneer finish. The black granite paved on the counter top adds the perfect contrast here.
The family credits architects Kirti Suvarnan and Sateesh AV of the SATKRIYA based in Kozhikode, for designing such a stunning ‘green’ home that is untouched by the bustle of the city.
