Irinjalakuda house in small plot mesmerizes with its smart design

The elegant triangular exposed brick wall design in the front has become the focal point that draws instant attention.

Selvi George and family are thrilled to share their experience of building their dream abode by overcoming the spatial challenges posed by a small plot in Irinjalakkuda in Thrissur, Kerala. The 10 cents plot stands out for its ‘L’ shaped layout. The plot has 3 cents in the front side while the rectangular area in the backside is in 7 cents. Moreover, a well too stands in the 3 cents in the front. So, it was impossible to construct the house in this 3 cents land. The house now stands on the remaining 7 cents.

The elevation couldn’t be embellished with over the top design features due to the spatial limitation of the plot. However, the elegant triangular exposed brick wall design in the front has become the focal point which draws instant attention.

Designed in 2500 sqft, this beautiful abode has a car porch, sit out, formal and family living areas, prayer area, dining space, kitchen with a work area, four bedrooms, upper space and a balcony too.

The house has been designed by following the concept of a ‘single room’ that is incredibly vaster. Barring the bedrooms, every other space in this charming abode has been designed as part of the spacious hall. However, semi partitions and blinders have been used to ensure privacy wherever it is necessary.

The owner hasn’t hesitated to try something unique in the flooring works by using a blend of vitrified and wooden tiles to separate the areas. The custom made furniture blends well with the general theme of the house. Meanwhile, the hand railings of the stairway feature the classy combination of wood and stainless steel. Interestingly, the hand railings are extended to the upper storey too. The use of timber has been minimal in furnishing to keep a check on the expenses. Aluminium has been used on the windows.

It is the double height spaces in the house that connect both the floors. This makes the areas look and feel spacious. Meanwhile, the bridge like corridors on the upper floor is an interesting feature. The glass skylights above these corridors bring lots of natural sun shine into the house. Besides, this feature pushes out the hot air to maintain a comfortable atmosphere inside the house.

Two bedrooms each are arranged in both the floors. The bedrooms are minimal yet boast of all the necessary facilities. Besides attached bathrooms, in – built wardrobes and separate study spaces too are arranged in the bedrooms.

The open kitchen is just adjacent to the dining area. A quaint breakfast too has been arranged as part of the modern kitchen. The cupboards here are done in marine plywood finish. The counter top, meanwhile, has been paved with granite.

Interestingly, the living and the dining areas of this house is just 9 feet wide. However, the spaces do not feel congested despite being built in such a small plot. The guests too are in awe of this amazing house that stands out for its comfortable spaces and chic designs.
