Sreenath, who works in the Gulf, wished to build his brand–new house in the same plot where his old house stood. The double-storey house in Chirakadavu near Ponkunnam that faces a rivulet is simple yet elegant.
Sreenath, his wife Sreekala who is a teacher and their kids Goutham and Daksh are admirers of traditional architecture. So, they wanted their dream dwelling to be single-storey house that features some of the classic designer elements.
Noted design engineer Sreekant Pangapad was roped in to design the house. The idea to design an additional floor came up when the family demanded five bedrooms.
Besides a bedroom, the upper floor has an open courtyard that is lit with natural sunshine and could be used as a relaxing reading area.
Meanwhile, four bath-attached bedrooms, formal and family living areas, dining hall, open kitchen, storeroom and a work area too have been arranged on the ground floor.
The long veranda and the sit-out exude the elegant charm of the traditional architecture. Moreover, these features effectively block the harsh sun rays that fall from the west side.
A quaint balcony that is accessible from the truss roof is an interesting feature. The house that is designed in 2930 sqft has five bedrooms.
The nutmeg tree in the spacious front yard has been retained to cater to the family’s nostalgia.
