Being a home-maker is a full-time job but many a time one gets the sense of not doing something for oneself. That is not to say I did not enjoy being a mother to two highly energetic boys. I was 36 and it was 12 years after my marriage. But ever since zumba came into my life, my life has never been the same.
It was a year ago that I came across a zumba programme. I decided to enrol for the classes and it soon became a daily ritual of spending an hour for myself. I really enjoyed it. After observing my talent and skill at the classes, my zumba instructors and fellow classmates suggested that I should seriously take up zumba as a profession and become an instructor.
Though I was eager to do this, I was also reluctant initially. Being a home-maker and a full-time mother, a few restrictions kept me from taking that final decision. A year later, with a lot of encouragement and support from my family and close friends, I did my zumba basic level 1 training in June 2015 with zumba master trainer Sucheta Pal.
I realised it was the best decision I had ever made. She is the first master trainer for zumba fitness in India; a big source of inspiration for me.
Since I did not want to compromise on the time spent with my boys at home or deny them their extracurricular evening activities, I started conducting zumba classes at home daily while my kids were at school. I catered to mothers in similar situations.
My clientele consists mostly of How zumba changed Mumbai-based home-maker Tanya Powell’s life A dual role full-time mothers. They sometimes bring their kids along, which ultimately turns out to be a play date with my boys which suits us all just fine. The ladies get a chance to have fun doing zumba with ease in a friendly and homely atmosphere.
Often, I try to break the monotony of zumba classes by taking my clients to a beach in the early mornings. The response I get is exhilarating. Zumba has made a huge difference in my life, making me a very fit and healthy individual and it motivates me to inspire many other mothers to get active.
Being a zumba instructor has given me confidence and I am looking forward to reaching out to help others to attain their fitness goals in a positive and fun environment. It also gives me a chance to meet and make friends with so many wonderful people. I feel it is a win-win situation for all.
