Respect women

Young women are increasingly being shackled in Kerala. Old diktats that prescribe modesty for girls and isolation from society are coming back in force. This is not a desirable trend. Strengthening moral policing is not suitable for a civilized society such as Kerala.

We have lost several precious lives to such acts. The report of the suicide of a young man who could not bear the insult was shocking. Many such incidents are happening across the state. The people have to stand up against this social perversion. This has to be prevented at any cost. We need effective legislation.

Kerala witnessed an unprecedented show of solidarity to ensure the safety of women, yet several girls were beaten up at the Marine Drive in Ernakulam. They were seen sitting with boys! Self-proclaimed defenders of “morality” were out torturing youngsters physically and mentally.

Who gave them the right to beat up young people mature enough to vote in an election and to make decisions for themselves? What evil acts did they do to offend the moral eyes?

We have a police force and a legal system to correct a wrong. We are sending out a wrong signal when people are allowed to take law into their own hands.

Respect for women should not be confined to the rituals associated with the celebration of Women’s Day. She deserves respect all the time. Indian civilization is based on women. There is no point in asking for an awareness campaign to ensure women’s safety. Those who are aware of the issue should take the lead.

The incidents being reported these days were unheard of when we were students. Every parent avers that we are passing through a bad phase. Girls need at atmosphere that ensures her a sense of security and respect so that she can play her part in the march towards national progress.

Unfortunately, society is still maintaining the cruel silence that let the Kauravas humiliate Draupadi. We need strong voices in favor of safety and resistance. Every girl should realize that they are being targeted with a conscious decision. There is no time to lose for women to stand up and fight the humiliating treatment. Girls have to react strongly.
