Kannur: P Sasi, who was expelled from the Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM) while working as the Kannur district secretary in 2011, has returned to the party after a court gave him a clean chit in a sexual assault case.

He has been reinstated into the party ranks and was given a membership in the Thalassery town court branch of the CPM.

The state committee’s decision in this regard was reported before the Kannur district committee in June and was later conveyed to the Thalassery area committee.

Sasi, who was also a member of the CPM state committee, was expelled from the party following serious allegations of moral turpitude in July 2011.

The Hosdurg magistrate court had last year acquitted Sasi in a case filed by one T P Nandakumar alleging sexual harassment.

Sasi had expressed his intention to return to the party following the development. The state committee and senior leaders, after holding discussions on the matter, decided to renew his membership.

Sasi had been working as an advocate after his expulsion from the CPM. He had also shifted his residence from Mavilayi to Thalassery

Despite his ouster from the party, the leader maintained close contact with the CPM top brass.

During his stint as an advocate, Sasi had appeared for CPM workers accused in the T P Chadrasekharan murder case and the Kathirur Manoj murder case among others.

He also managed to get himself inducted into the district committee of the pro-CPM advocates union in 2015.

Meanwhile, the party has taken action against two members who had filed complaints against Sasi, once a top leader of the official faction.

While CKP Padmanabhan, who had filed the first complaint, was relegated to the branch from state committee on charges of financial misappropriation, a DYFI district leader who had submitted another complaint found himself out of the party ranks soon after.
