Thiruvananthapuram: A panel has recommended to the state government to raise autorickshaw and taxi fares in Kerala, considering the regular rise in fuel prices.

Justice Ramachandran Nair committee, which was tasked with the review of the fares, has recommended that the minimum autorickshaw fare be raised from Rs 20 to Rs 30. Taxis, whose minimum fare is Rs 150, can charge a minimum of Rs 200.

Member Secretary K. Padmakumar said the report will be submitted to the government on Monday. The final decision on the recommendations is left to the government.

The panel has proposed an increase in per kilometre charges too. Autorickshaws can charge Rs 12 per kilometre, an increase of Rs 2. Taxis should be allowed a per kilometre rate of Rs 15, the panel has recommended.

A demand made by trade unions to alter the distance for minimum fare has not been accepted. Neither has the panel considered their plea to check online taxis.
