Changanacherry: Labourers affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) carried out a demonstration in Changanacherry town on Friday to protest against the controversial statement of opposition leader VD Satheesan distancing the Congress party from its trade union.

The labourers who are based at the Changanacherry market held the demonstration on Friday morning and denounced Satheesan's remark that INTUC is not a part of the Congress party.

"We are not against the Congress. We are just expressing our protest against the opposition leader's statement," the INTUC leaders in the town said.

The demonstration commenced from the market and concluded at the Central Junction.

Meanwhile, INTUC state leader R Chandrasekharan asked its members to refrain from protesting against the Leader of Opposition.

"This is not the time to complain. We are with the Congress party," he said.

On Wednesday, Satheesan had said the INTUC was not a feeder organisation of his party, the Congress. He was apparently upset over the support extended to CPM leader Elamaram Kareem by INTUC state leader R Chandrasekharan. Kareem was castigated by an anchor of a TV news channel during a debate on the two-day nationwide strike earlier this week. Moreover, Satheesan was likely spurred by the need to defend the Congress from any blemish over the excesses committed by the labourers in the name of the general strike.
