Thiruvananthapuram: In another daring attack, stones were pelted at the District Committee Office of the ruling Communist Party of India Marxist (CPM) in the wee hours of Saturday.

According to the police, six bike-borne miscreants threw stones at the office. Thiruvananthapuram CPM district secretary Anavoor Nagappan's car was damaged in the attack.

Another vehicle parked in front of the office was also pelted with stones. Though two policemen stationed in front of the office tried to nab the culprits, their efforts were in vain.

Nagappan, who was inside the office during the time of the attack, accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of plotting the violence.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, LDF Convener EP Jayarajan and Minister V Sivankutty visited the office upon learning of the attack.

Vijayan warned that strict action will be taken against those attacking party offices and creating an atmosphere of fear and violence in the city.

In a statement, Vijayan said, "A strong public opinion should be formed against the attack on the party offices and workers. It's a move to destroy the peaceful atmosphere in the state. The police has been instructed to bring the culprits to book."

Left Democratic Front (LDF) convenor, E P Jayarajan, alleged that "RSS criminals" were behind the attack and expressed hope that police will nab them soon.

Jayarajan said the Sangh Parivar elements were purposefully engaged in 'destroying' the peace and harmony prevailing in the society.

"It was the RSS criminals, who attacked the district committee office. Stones were hurled on the car of the District Secretary and it seems like their aim was to attack if someone came out of the office on hearing the noises outside."

The CCTV camera installed in front of the office is likely to have captured the miscreants in action, the police said. However, this footage has not been released to them yet.

On June 30, an unidentified man had hurled firecrackers at AKG Centre, the CPM's state office.

The police are yet to nab the accused despite having received the CCTV footage of the man even after almost two months since the incident.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Surendran alleged that the party office attack was devised to turn the public's attention from the many problems plaguing the CPM.
