Cases against 1,050 vehicles for MVD norms violation in Kerala on Sunday

Alappuzha: The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) on Sunday lodged cases against 1,050 vehicles for various violations as part of its Operation Focus 3 project that was launched post the Vadakkencherry bus accident that claimed nine lives.

Following statewide inspections conducted by the MVD, Rs 14,54,550 were imposed in fine of which Rs 1,93,000 was collected.

The fitness certificates of 74 vehicles were cancelled while 30 driving licenses were also suspended.

Cases were registered against 48 vehicles for illegal alterations and 92 others for defective speed governors.

Besides, 754 vehicles were penalised for instaling laser/coloured/flash lights, which is not permitted by law. On the charges of causing noise pollution and having air horns, action was taking against 175 vehicles.

On Saturday, MVD registered 67 cases throughout the state as part of the operation and a fine of Rs 87,000 was levied. Yesterday, the drive was held at Thamarassery in Kozhikode, Museum Junction in Thiruvananthapuram, and in Idukki.

The most common violations were illegal horn fittings and decorative lights. According to MVD, vehicles caught violating the law for the first time will be let off with a fine.

Operation Focus 3 will continue inspections in the coming days as well. Night travel inspections will also be tightened. The MVD has so far taken action against 134 contract carriages in the wake of the Vadakkencherry tragedy.
