Kerala Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau has interrogated V.A. Arun Kumar, son of V.S. Achuthanandan, in connection with 11 allegations, including illegal monetary gain. The accused was summoned to the office of Special Cell Superintendent of Police for interrogation on Wednesday.
The probe is based on the complaint raised by Oommen Chandy, then opposition leader, alleging that Arun Kumar was involved in several cases of financial irregularity, including illegal monetary gain, while V.S. Achuthanandan was the chief minister.
The 11 allegations include demanding commission for the implementation of Kannur power project, securing illegal promotion in IHRD, unlawful appointment as the Director at ICT, financial irregularities at Coirfed while he was the Director, membership in two prominent clubs, taking a bribe of Rs 7 lakhs from a sandal factory owner and his pleasure trips to foreign countries like Macau. Despite the completion of the probe, interventions from the upper authorities prevented it from being taken to the higher level in the form of a report.
Of late, Jacob Thomas, the Director of Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau, has ordered for an acceleration of all the probes that are delayed. The interrogation of Arun Kumar was triggered by the order.
The Vigilance sources hinted that Arun Kumar gave no satisfactory answer to the question regarding the source of money for his pleasure trips to countries like Macau and Singapore. The investigation report will soon be handed over to the director.
