Chittar Ill-fated giant wheel in Chittar

Pathanamthitta: It has been found that the giant wheel that had caused the mishap, in which a five-year-old boy had lost his life, was established at the carnival venue flouting norms.

No required security measures were taken for running the giant wheel nor the organizers had obtained permission from the panchayat or the fire and rescue service department, it has been alleged. The Chittar police took two persons, who operated the giant wheel, into custody. The giant wheel was also found to have been installed close to a high tension 11 kV power line.

The accident occurred in Chittar near here on Thursday evening in which a five-old-boy, Alan K. Saji, fell off the giant wheel and died. His sister had sustained injuries in the accident. The children fell from the 20-feet high giant wheel which was established in Chittar as part of an Onam fair organized by Green Events.

The mishap took place before the eyes of the parents whose another daughter was riding in a separate cabin of the wheel. Chittar police have halted the fair following the incident.
