Palakkad: Various organizations connected to motor vehicles sector called a strike in Kerala on June 15 in protest against the recent National Green Tribunal order against diesel-powered vehicles in the state.
If the NGT order comes into place, an indefinite strike will be launched from June 23, they said.
Carrier trucks from Tamil Nadu will also take part in the strike, which was decided at a meeting of representatives of the organizations on Monday.
The outfits formed a joint committee to give a call for the strike after no organizations came forward in protest against the Green Tribunal's verdict.
All vehicles, including auto rickshaws, taxis, buses and trucks, will take part in the strike and stay off roads on June 15. Vehicle dealers and work-shop owners will also be participating in the day-long stir.
In a significant judgement, a bench of the National Green Tribunal in Kochi circuit had ruled that diesel vehicles older than ten years should not be allowed to run in six corporations in the state and had placed a curb on registration of diesel vehicles, which are above 2000 cc.
The High Court recently stayed this judgement partially and an appeal by the state against ruling is expected to follow soon. The government has already sent a file to the law secretary seeking legal advice on the issue.
