Kochi: A Tamil Nadu native who allegedly attempted suicide by setting himself in fire in the toilet of a moving train earlier this month in Kerala succumbed to his burn injuries Monday.

S. Nivas (24), son of Vellore resident Sreenivasan, died in the Ernakulam Medical Center in Kochi by noon.

Nivas had allegedly attempted suicide on board the Mumbai-bound Netravati Express at Kayamkulam on August 16, triggering panic among travelers.

He had sustained 60 percent burns to his body and was under treatment in two other hospitals before being taken to the hospital in Kochi.

"He was brought to this hospital with 60 per cent burn injuries on August 16. He died at 2.20 PM today while undergoing treatment," a spokesperson for the Ernakulam Medical Center said.

On August 16, Nivas, traveling in a general compartment, suddenly rushed to the toilet and set himself on fire. When smoke and smell started emanating from the toilet, other passengers opened the door and dragged him out, eyewitnesses said.

The general compartment was next to the engine and an air conditioned bogey, which were detached from it after the incident.

It came to light when the train, which originated from Thiruvananthapuram, was held up at Kayamkulam station for some time that day.

He was rushed to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital soon after the incident.

Later, he was shifted to the private hospital here by police for providing him better treatment.

Police suspect the man was mentally unstable.
