Policing the sun: DGP arms traffic cops with water File photo of T.P. Senkumar.

Thodupuzha: As Kerala reels under an oppressive summer, the state police chief has ordered the force to keep the policemen well hydrated. Policemen on traffic duty and picket duty should be given drinking water or lime juice at least four times between 10.00 am and 4 pm, says a circular issued by director general of police T.P. Senkumar.

The expenses for supplying water or lime juice can be drawn from the police welfare fund, the circular adds.

A few policemen reportedly suffered sunstroke while on traffic duty on the streets. The DGP’s circular, sent to additional directors general of police, inspectors general and superintendents of police, says the measures are meant to ensure the safety of policemen during the hours when temperature is unbearably high.
