Thrissur Pooram: govt okays fireworks, but Thursday's hartal stays Representational image

Thrissur: Even though the cabinet has given its nod for the conduct of the Thrissur pooram without much restrictions, the Kerala Festival Coordination Committee has decided to go ahead with the dawn-to-dusk hartal in Thrissur Thursday. The hartal is to protest the curbs on fireworks at the Utralikavu pooram.

The committee decided so as the collector failed to give nod to hold fireworks in Utralikavu festival.

The cabinet decided to allow Thrissur Pooram like in previous years ensuring adequate security and after informing the Center.

Last year, the Pooram was conducted amid tight security in the light of the Kollam temple tragedy that claimed over 100 lives. After the tragedy, the Kerala High Court had put in place a number of strict guidelines on religious festivals that involved fireworks.

The court had then allowed low-decibel fireworks display at night during the Thrissur Pooram, exempting it from the ban.

Kudamattam, fireworks, parading of elephants and traditional percussion music are the main attractions of Thrissur Pooram.
