Ram Jethmalani

Kochi: Law expert and MP, Ram Jethmalani, said that his hopes on Modi has been proved wrong. He added that the government is helping black money holders.

Jethmalani said that the government should not have a role in selecting judges to the Supreme Court and High Court. He was speaking at an educational programme arranged for public prosecutors on white collar crime.

Jethmalani said that Modi had promised to bring home Rs 9000 crores of black money stashed away in foreign banks and distribute Rs 15 lakhs per home using that money. Now, the silence of Modi is a sign of his fleeting priorities, Jethmalani said.

Even after a Swiss magazine had published the names of Indian black-money holders, nothing was done by the government. Jethmalani said that he was barred from the BJP for questioning the silence of the government. He added that the results in Bihar are a lesson for Modi.

He said that the government should not nominate judges because of obvious conflict of interests. The MP said that the Supreme Court was right in rejecting the National Judicial Appointments Commission law and the 99th constitution amendment. This is the first time in history that a bill was supported by the ruling and opposition parties and it was meant to sabotage the due processes involved in the appointment of judges in the nation, he said.

He said that Arun Jaitley, who had said that amendments by those who were selected by the people had been rejected by those who had not been elected, had lost elections at Amrithsar. Jethmalani said that public prosecutors should be impartial and provide equal support-as mandated by the constitution- to the convict as well as the victim.

The function was attended by Director General of Prosecutions, T. Asaf Ali, Advocate General K.P. Dandapani and others.
