Russian award for Kudankulam nuke plant site director

New Delhi: Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant site director R S Sundar will be bestowed with "Order of Friendship" by the Russian government for his contribution to implementation of the KKNPP project.

The country has announced a decree awarding Order of Friendship to Sundar for his contribution to the implementation of the KKNPP project, according to the official portal of the Russian government.

Sundar has been associated with the project since its inception. He joined the KNNPP office in 2002 in Mumbai.

Subsequently, he was moved to Tamil Nadu's Kudankulam site in 2004 and made in-charge of the site since May 2012.

The project had witnessed several protests from anti-nuclear activists and local farmers.

Sundar was also the in-charge when the plant was commissioned in October 2013. The next unit of Kudankulam is likely to start this year.

KKNPP is being built with Russian assistance in accordance with Inter-governmental agreement of 1988.

In 2014, Russia and India signed the General framework agreement for construction of the second phase of the NPP (third and fourth Units). The General framework agreement for fifth and sixth Units of NPP Kudankulam is expected to be signed soon.
