IPL 2021 has been hit hard by the coronavirus even before its start as a number of ground-staff at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and some cricketers have contracted the infection.
Padikkal, who has tested positive for COVID-19, is likely to miss RCB's first few matches and as a result Azhar could open the innings along with Kohli.
The opener is likely to miss RCB's opening match against Mumbai Indians on Friday.
