Passing by Wayanad? Treat yourself to some wild berries

If you are passing through Wayanad be prepared for a treat. The tribal people have set up stalls selling the wild berries - mainly jamun (Syzygium cumini) along the roads from Muthanga to Ponkuzhi

The tribal people in this part of Wayanad gather honey, Kalpasham (also known as Kalpasi, belonging to the parmelia perlata family of lichens and is used as a food flavoring agent) and Kurumthotti (Morning mallow) from the forest. They trade these products through the cooperative societies. Now, with the weather being conducive, the jamun trees have borne fruit and this has led to them being sold on the roads.

The cooperatives pluck the fruits from the trees and pack it in cloth bags. One packet usually contains half kilogram fruit that sells  at Rs 40. And needless to say, the business is picking up. Do stop by and pick up your pack.
