The Lakshadweep authorities have decided to tap the tourism potential of 12 more islands in the territory and formulate marketing programmes for the purpose. This is part of the central government's strategic plans for tourism development.
Tourism-related activities will be allowed in islands like ecologically-fragile Bangaram and Kadmat islands only after exhaustive scientific studies and preparation of an action plan.
Meanwhile, the government has also decided to ease the restrictions imposed on development works and travel in various places.
Most of the islands which will now be opened to tourists have stunning coral reefs, wide coconut plantations and long sandy beaches. Over the last few years, little development had taken place in the tourism sector of Lakshwadeep. The new plan to attract tourists also considers investments and projects under public-private partnership (PPP).
