Kochi: Tata Consultancy Services, believed to be the biggest software firm in the nation, has made significant energy savings through its facility that is installed in Kochi.

The firm has installed a centralised system in Kochi that monitors and controls electricity use in 103 centres in various districts in the nation. The facility had been installed in the TCS Resource Operation Centre in Inforpark here.

The firm, which used to incur close to Rs 500 crore as electricity charges annually, saved about Rs 27 crore by preventing the misuse of electricity.

The system allows information from the company's 7,300 electricity meters and 4,300 sensors to reach TCS' Connected Universal Platform every 15 minutes.

Everyday about 10 lakh observations are made about use of electricity.

The cloud-based data analytical system in Kochi would allow officials to be alerted about excessive use of electricity by any system in any office of the firm.

Eighteen experts of the firm monitor the use of power and convey corrective measures, if needed, to those concerned.

Last year, issuing alerts helped the TCS to save 2.7-crore units of electricity. The team in Kochi would also be able to switch off power to any system that is under performing.

However, that has not been done yet. The system would also allow the firm to calculate power usage per employee.

Dinesh P Thampi, TCS VP and head of Kerala Delivery Centre said that the system is not just restricted to monitoring power usage. It would also allow the software giant to source electricity from vendors who offer the lowest price for power.

In addition, the system may also be used to keep a tab on water consumption and transport, he added.
