Kerala augments education sector with funds, 30 Centres of Excellence in universities

The Kerala finance minister Thomas Issac, in the Kerala Budget 2021 has announced Rs 1,175 crore for higher education and Rs 1,165 crore for school education.

He announced that 30 Centres of Excellence would come up in the universities. The Centres would be named after MGK Menon, ECG Sudarshan, E K Iyengar, BC Shekhar, G N Ramachandran, Ann Mani, P K Menon, R S Krishnan, P R Pisharody, E K Janaki Ammal, K R Ramanathan, Gopinath Kartha and M K Venu Bapu.

While Rs 100 crore would be given for establishing the centres, Rs 500 crore would be sanctioned from KIIFB for development of infrastructure facilities.

Major universities will receive a maximum of Rs 125 crore and other universities Rs 75 crore as assistance from KIIFB. A total of Rs 2000 crore from KIIFB including the funds already given, will be utilized for the modernisation of universities.

Of the Rs 1175 crore plan outlay for the higher education sector, Rs 392 crore is for 15 universities. Besides, Rs 24 crore for IIITM-K. Innovative research and industrial higher education sector coordination will get Rs 20 crore.

Dr Palpu Epidemiology School

The school epidemiological studies to be set up in Kerala health university will be named after Dr Palpu. Thrissur medical college will be converted into campus medical college. 

The government has set aside Rs 56 crore for development of infrastructure facilities in government colleges and Rs 28 crore for facilities for NAAC accreditation. The library building in UC College Aluva will be constructed in memory of P Govinda Pillai and PK Vasudevan Nair for which Rs 5 crore has been set aside and Rs 20 crore would be given for the silver jubilee year programmes of Kannur university.
