Finally, director Abrid Shine found out the lyricists of 'Poomaram' song that has become the talk of the town after the video of the song in his upcoming film Poomaram was released online recently.
They are Dayal Singh and Asan Babu, natives of Valiya Panikkan Thuruth near Kodungallur in Thrissur.
Asan Babu had written the lyrics initially and Dayal rewrote them to make it into a song. Their version is different from the current song, and is more energetic than soothing in nature.
The song passed from one person to another and reached Maharaja's College, Ernakulam where it became quite popular with the students. It was former Maharaja's student Sudheesh Sudhan who took the song to the college after hearing it from Dayal Singh when they both worked for a house's construction in Pala.
Abrid Shine picked up the song from Faizal Razi, who had given it a melodious touch, and included it in Poomaram. The version used in the film is composed and sung by Faizal himself.
Doubt not, Dayal Singh, a 40-year-old fisherman, is not a north Indian. He was given this name by his father Gopalan, who once worked in Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh, out of his affection for a friend who worked with him there.
Dayal, who was a construction worker, used to sing the song in the many places where he worked. It was from Asan Babu that he got the song.
Asan Babu and Dayal Singh.Asan Babu, a fishing boat worker, had been trying to make a song from the sleaze-flavored lines that fishermen often sang when pulling in the nets. He later included Dayal in his efforts and the song was born. The song in the film has only very little changes from the original composition; this is palpable in the rendition of the lyricists.
Asan Babu is a security guard at Kottapuram Kids, an organization at Kottapuram, Kodungallur. It was Sister Mercy of Kottapuram who informed Abrid Shine about the lyricists.
A couple of days ago, Abrid Shine, along with Faizal Razi, met Dayal Singh and Asan Babu, who are to be felicitated in a function later at Kottapuram. The event will be attended by Abrid Shine, the movie's hero Kalidas Jayaram and others in the Poomaram team.
Now, isn't that's a happy musical ending to a song's story? :)
