Naval officer Abhilash Tomy, representing India in the Golden Globe Race 2018, was rescued on the third day after he was injured after his yacht was battered in severe storm in the Indian Ocean last week. Though he lay incapacitated, apparently due to spine injury, he sustained himself by sipping lots of ice tea.
During his solo bid for circumnavigation, Tomy's sailboat 'Thuriya' carried specially prepared food items and fresh water in the limited space on board. For the voyage, he carried ready-to-eat food from India. Normally sailors carry freeze-dried food and Tomy too had it.
Born in God’s Own Country, it is but natural for Cdr Tomy to be partial to seafood. He carried lots of cans of tuna, sardines and sausages. In addition to tinned food, he also took about 300 litres of water.
The sailor had also stocked up on rice, snacks, special fried fish and banana chips prepared by his mother.
Around 1,000 ready-to-eat-meals were carried by the intrepid seafarer as he set about for a solo, round-the-world sailing race.
