New Delhi: As the Congress emerged the single largest party in Goa and Manipur notwithstanding the saffron wave that engulfed Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in the state polls, two Keralaite leaders have a lot to be proud of.

While K.C. Venugopal MP's tactics catapulted the Congress to its fine show in Goa, Kerala opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala led the party's campaign in Manipur.

In Goa, the panels for candidate selection and campaign strategies were led by Venugopal. The panel's decision to go it alone in the polls also proved right as it boosted the party's image and confidence.

Congress won 17 seats in the 40-member Assembly while the ruling BJP had to settle for 13 seats in the smallest state in the country. The Congress pins its hopes on smaller parties and independents to form the government in Goa.

In Manipur, Chennithala's push for a door-to-door campaign in the Kerala model seems to have helped the Congress resist the BJP's super-charged campaign. Even as the BJP made huge inroads into the state which had been ruled by the Congress for three consecutive terms, the latter could still win 28 seats in the 60-member Assembly. The BJP ended up with 21 seats. Both the parties have staked claims to form government with the support of smaller parties and independents.

Chennithala's experience as AICC general secretary in charge of northeast states led to him being entrusted with the responsibility during the polls. He has left for Manipur to discuss possibilities of forming the government.
