Studies reveal that including loads of green leafy vegetables in the daily diet would effectively prevent fatty liver. Fatty liver is often caused by alcohol consumption and obesity.
Green and leafy vegetables are storehouses of inorganic nitrate which prevents fat from getting deposited in the liver. The researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have found out, in an experiment conducted in rats, that the green leafy vegetables can fight liver diseases.
The rats were fed primarily with a Western diet which included lots of fats and sugar. Dietary nitrate too were given to the rats along with this diet. It was found out that the amount of fat deposited in the livers of these rats were significantly low. The researchers are all set to expand their clinical research to understand the incredible therapeutic qualities of the nitrate in preventing liver cirrhosis.
It is already known that including fruits and vegetables in the diet can preserve the health of the heart and prevent diabetes. During the experiment, it was found out that green vegetables and fruits can regulate the levels of insulin, glucose and homeostasis in the rats which were affected with type 2 diabetes. A healthy diet which includes lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits helps control high blood pressure.
Fatty liver may gradually lead to more dangerous conditions like cirrhosis and even liver cancer. The researchers hope that the latest experiments may further lead to effective treatments and medications.
The study has, in fact, stressed the importance of following a diet rich in proteins and nutrients. The report of the study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
