Kannur: The 'She Shelter' project aimed to provide safe accommodation for women who reach the city at night will be opened soon here. An air conditioned and fully furnished room is ready on the first storey of the building where the office of the district panchayat functions. The facility will be inaugurated next month. Women can spend a night here, and in special circumstances they would be allowed to stay up to three days.

Arrangements are made at the facility to accommodate eight women at a time. There is a hotel run by the Kudumbasree members close by. The safety of the women staying here is assured as the women's police station and the town police station are in vicinity. Officials say that this facility would be beneficial for women who reach the city with their daughters as well. However, boys above 10 years of age who accompany their mothers wouldn't be allowed to stay here. The district panchayat has allotted about 20 lakh rupees for this exemplar project.

District panchayat president K V Sumesh says, ''This project is being flagged off as a service to the society. Women can check-in at the facility at any time. The functioning of the shelter will be supervised by the Kudumbasree. The district panchayat aims to provide safe and comfortable accommodation for the women who reach the city for various purposes.''
