History set with first-ever exclusive varsity event for transgenders

Ria Isha scripts history with first transgender arts fest event at Calicut University
Malappuram Government College student Ria Isha became the first transgender to participate in the C-Zone Folk Dance in the university’s 50-year arts festival history.

Kozhikode: Calicut University has for the first time organised an art festival event under the transgender category and one student has probably become the first to participate in the all-new competitive category of any institutional contest.

Malappuram Government College student Ria Isha became the first transgender to participate in the C-Zone Folk Dance in the university’s 50-year arts festival history. This comes after Ria filed a petition with university authorities seeking to participate in arts and sports events under a third category. However, age restrictions kept the 26-year-old from competing in sports events.

Transgenders were competing either in girls or boys sections until now.
