Thiruvananthapuram: The Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) suspended former legislator S Rajendran from its ranks on Friday after it was found that the latter had sabotaged the party efforts in the 2021 Assembly elections.

The development came after the CPM State Secretariat approved the District Committee recommendation to suspend Rajendran.

Earlier, the Inquiry Commission formed to investigate the matter gave weight to allegations that Rajendran had indeed sabotaged the party's efforts so that the LDF candidate A Raja lost the election. (Raja, however, won the state polls and currently represents the Devikulam constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.)

The former MLA who won thrice from the Devikulam constituency - in 2006, 2011, and 2016 - will be suspended for 1 year.

Rajendran who said he "accepts the State Secretariat decision" also remarked that the party had acted in the interest of a few local leaders.

He did not also rule out the possibility of moving to another political camp. He said he needs "to seek the views of his associates" for the same.

Devikulam is a grama panchayat 8 km from Munnar hill station in Kerala's Idukki district.
