MG University plans foolproof mechanism on the lines of visa centres to root out graft

Kottayam: The cash-for-marks corruption case has prompted the Mahatma Gandhi University to consider implementing a foolproof mechanism to prevent such incidents in future.

As part of the move, the varsity is likely to roll out a facilitation centre on the lines of visa processing centres, besides restricting the entry of the members of the public, including students, to its various sections.

A team of experts under Vice-Chancellor Dr Sabu Thomas drafted an elaborate plan on Sunday. The plan would be placed at the syndicate meeting convened to discuss the bribery issue on Monday, Dr Thomas said.

The vice-chancellor said the visa centres have been using modern technology developed by VFS Global, also known as "Visa Facilitation Services Global. The university will establish a centralised front office for students on the lines of visa centres. Students will be allowed entry only up to the front office, which will provide information on examinations and issue marklists and certificates.

(VFS Global is an outsourcing and technology services company serving governments and diplomatic missions worldwide.)

Only employees will be allowed into the other sections of the university, Dr Thomas said. Earlier, entry to confidential sections was restricted, and a public service centre provided the required information to students.

The restrictions on entering the offices were later lifted in a phased manner following complaints of incompetence against the public service centres. All restrictions were lifted after the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

A university assistant, C J Elsy, was arrested on Saturday while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from an MBA student on promises of altering the latter's marklist. This incident prompted the varsity to consider a foolproof system.
