Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala does not face any power crisis at present and there is no need to impose load-shedding or power cut, according to Kerala Electricity Minister K Krishnankutty.
"Apart from domestic production, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has entered into long-term contracts with independent producers for the supply of 1,215 megawatts of power and electricity-generating stations under the Central government for 1,741 megawatts," he said in reply to question by Member of the Legislative Assembly P Ubaidulla in the House. The minister also shared these details on Facebook.
In addition, Kerala has signed contracts with private non-conventional power producers, said Krishnankutty.
"Electricity generation at the state's hydel projects has been streamlined to preserve water for use during acute summer. Moreover, power will be sourced from other states when summer peaks and consumption shoots up through banking deals with the approval of KSERC (Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission)," he said.
Under these deals, power will be supplied by Kerala to the other states during monsoon months, the minister added.
"To overcome daily shortfalls, electricity will be bought at a discounted rate from various power exchanges," he said.
Competition tenders in 'Deep portal' will also be utilized to make short-term purchases, Krishnankutty informed.
On measures to reduce power consumption during peak hours, he said instructions in this regard were being issued regularly through various media by the Energy Management Centre.
