Kochi: The first set of coaches for the Kochi Metro arrived at Aluva on Saturday. The three coaches brought here in specially designed trailers from Alstom’s rolling stock manufacturing plant at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. The coaches will be moved to Kochi Metro Yard at Muttom on Sunday.
The trailers which started from Sri City on January 2 crossed the Kerala border on Friday morning. They have been halted at Kanjikode near Palakkad.
Special machinery and expert labourers also arrived here on Saturday. The coaches will be kept on the inspection line for 10 days for various checks before they are joined to form the Metro train. Then they will be transferred to the train test track for a trial run.
Electrical and mechanical tests will be done at this stage apart from checks on the braking and communication systems.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will flag off the trial run for Kochi Metro on January 23. The trial run will be held on a 900-metre long track, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) officials said. The trial run on the actual Metro track will be held later.
Work on the ramp from the test track in the yard to the Metro track is still on. This has to be approved before the train could be rolled onto it.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has also brought in the battery-operated road-cum-rail vehicles to transfer the coaches from the unloading platform to the inspection track.
