Thiruvananthapuram: All buses belonging to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation will be fitted with GPS within six months. A meeting chaired by transport minister A.K. Saseendran also decided to install the tracking technology in the 92 depots of the corporation.
As many as 750 buses have already been fitted with GPS. Passengers will be able to receive live information on the arrival and departure of buses from major bus stations within three months once the Passenger Information System (PIS) is implemented at the Thiruvananthapuram, Vyttila, Kottayam, Kozhikode and Kannur depots.
The corporation intends to generate Rs 50 crore a year as revenue from the ads displayed on the revamped information boards.
Passengers who have reserved tickets in a bus will be sent text messages including the current location of the bus, boarding point and the expected time of arrival. This could cut down on the waiting time at the bus stations and boarding points.
Transport secretary K.R. Jyothilal, Transport Commissioner Tomin J. Thachankary and KSRTC managing director Antony Chacko attended the meeting.
