Biju Radhakrishnan, Saritha get three-year jail term in 1st solar case verdict Biju Raadhakrishnan (L) and Saritha Nair

Perumbavoor: A court in Kerala Friday awarded three-year imprisonment to Biju Radhakrishanan and Saritha S. Nair, the two accused in the infamous solar panel scam, in a cheating case.

It also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each on them.

The judgment was delivered by the judicial magistrate, Perumbavoor, in a cheating case filed by K.M. Sajid. The duo had allegedly taken Rs 40 lakh from Sajid assuring him that a solar panel system would be established for him in Tamil Nadu and in the neighborhood of his house in Kerala.

Biju Radhakrishanan and Saritha are the first and second accused, respectively, in the case.

The court, however, set free three other accused in the case citing want of evidence; they are Malayalam film-TV actress Salu Menon, her mother Kaladevi and Manikandan from Kodungalloor, an employee of Team Solar, the entity that was involved in the fraud.

Police had launched an investigation against Saritha and Biju Radhakrishnan based on a complaint filed by Sajid in February 2013, accusing them of cheating him of lakhs of rupees.

In his complaint, Sajid said he paid the duo Rs 20 lakh for a solar plant and a windmill in Nagercoil. In all, Rs 40 lakh was handed over to the duo. Biju and Saritha had introduced themselves as Dr. R.B. Nair and Lakshmi Nair respectively, Sajid had said in a statement earlier.

The solar panel scam had rocked Kerala after the arrest of Saritha and her partner Biju Radhakrishnan. They allegedly cheated businessmen and NRIs from the state, by convincing them that they had high-level connections including with the then chief minister Oommen Chandy and his office.

The scam is being probed by a judicial commission set up by the previous Congress-led UDF government.

The solar panel scam pertains to alleged duping of several persons to the tune of crores of rupees by Saritha and Biju Radhakrishnan by offering solar panel solutions.

Friday's was the first verdict in a solar scam case.
