Thrissur: Police have filed case against Thrissur Police Academy IG, Suresh Rajpurohit and his minor son in connection with the latter's driving of an official vehicle. However, it has been alleged that the case was filed by levelling feeble charges. The case was filed by the Viyyur police as per the order issued by a Juvenile court. But no charge other than those under Juvenile Justice Act was levelled.

Suresh Rajpurohit's son had driven the official vehicles of the Thrissur Range IG and the police academy IG. When visuals of the vehicles being misused regularly by the boy for travelling to school and other purposes came out, P.D. Joseph, a social activist from Thrissur had moved the court demanding that a case be filed in connection with the incident.

Further, the juvenile court had ordered to file case against Suresh Rajpurohit and his son on Saturday last. However, Viyyur SI had not been willing to file a case even several days later. It is when the complainant lodged a separate complaint with the DGP against the delay in registering the case, that the Viyyur police filed the case.

The case filed against the IG and his son was under three sub-sections of CRPC 156 and section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act. The section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act can attract punishment of either a jail term up to six months or fine.

Meanwhile, there has been an outcry from various quarters alleging that the case was registered without invoking more sections under misuse of official position, violation of traffic rules and so on, despite evidence, to protect the IG. Although the home ministry had announced a department level probe against the IG, no action has been taken so far.
