Malappuram/Kozhikode: The dalit nursing student, struggling for her life after seniors forced her to drink toilet cleaner during ragging at a Karnataka college, told police in Kozhikode that she was subjected to the torture as she refused to dance in the nude.
A case has been registered against two Keralite nursing students in connection with the incident. According to a PTI report, eight Keralite girls were involved in the brutal torture, of which a Kollam native and an Idukki native have been booked by the police. Meanwhile, management of the nursing college in Gulbarga has played down the incident, saying it was a suicide attempt.
The 19-year-old dalit girl from Edappal, who has been admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital in a serious condition, said eight of her seniors held her down and forced the toxic liquid into her mouth. Some of them even recorded the cruel ragging on their mobile phones.
The girl was admitted to a hospital in Kalburgi in Karnataka initially but the students packed her off from there without the doctors’ permission to block a police investigation. The police had gone to the hospital but could not talk to the victim as she was in a serious condition.
She reached Kerala with the help of her classmates. She was admitted to hospitals in Edappal and Thrissur but was later referred to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital as she was not even able to drink water.
Minister A.K. Balan said the Kerala government would take care of the girl’s medical expenses and see to it that the culprits were punished.
