Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is gearing up to axe unprofitable schedules being operated under political duress.
The corporation has decided to do away with schedules that earn below Rs 10,000 by January 31.
If unit heads decide to operate such schedules under the insistence of political leaders, they would face action, the corporation has clarified.
The schedule restructuring is being taken as part of the efforts for improving the fiscal health of the corporation.
Of the 6,000 schedules being operated a day, 2,600 are earning below Rs 10,000, as per a recent study.
It has been proposed to restructure the schedules and raise their income to Rs.10,000. On restructuring a schedule that earned Rs 800, the income had risen to Rs 12,000.
Former ministers and MLAs then turned against the unit heads. A former minister insisted on operating a schedule as he had fixed earlier. On warning about dire consequences, the unit head decided to continue the schedule.
The rescheduling operations could not be pursued in Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur districts.
It was the reluctance of the unit heads to implement the decision that prompted the corporation to issue a firm directive.
