Kannur: The police team probing the rape of a minor girl at Kottiyoor near here has decided to slap conspiracy charges on the accused Catholic priest.
The police will send Fr. Robin Vadakkumcherry, who was arrested last month, back to judicial custody Monday. The cops decided to slap him with conspiracy charge after a four-day interrogation at Peravoor station.
He will be produced before the Thalassery additional district court. The investigation team will submit a report on the progress of the probe to the court.
During his custody period, the priest was not taken outside for evidence collection.
Meanwhile, the police are apparently in a fix as they have not been able to nab the rest of the accused, who allegedly tried to cover up the issue and save the priest from facing the law.
The high court has directed the police not to arrest Fr. Thomas Therakom, who was removed as chairman of Wayanad district child welfare committee, till Tuesday (March 14).
Three of the accused, including doctors at the hospital where the minor girl delivered a baby boy, have moved the Thalassery additional district court seeking anticipatory bail.
While the high court is yet to consider the bail plea of Sr. Ophelia, who is the superintendent of an orphanage at Vythiri, where the newborn baby was shifted to, another accused Sr. Betty is likely to move the court for bail Monday.
The rest of the accused -- Sr. Liz Maria, Sr. Aneeta, and Thankamma Nelliyani -- have yet to move the court.
Though the police had conducted searches at their convents, the nuns could not be traced.
