Kochi: The Kerala High Court here Monday commuted the death sentence given to ripper Jayanandan to life term in the murder of a housewife in Ernakulam district that took place 10 years ago.

This is the second time that Jayanandan is escaping the death sentence. Earlier, his death penalty was quashed by a court in another case where was accused of murdering a couple at Perinjanam in Thrissur.

Commuting the death sentence to life term, the court Monday said that Jayanandan will have to spend the remainder of his life in jail.

The case is that Jayanandan murdered Devaki alias Baby (51) by handing a severe blow to her head while she was asleep in her house at Puthanvelikkara in Ernakulam around 1 am in the night on October 2, 2006. Jayanandan also chopped off her left arm to steal 6 gold bangles. He also attacked Devaki's husband.

There are 23 other cases against Jayanandan, a native of Thrissur. The court had acquitted Jayanandan in a few cases.

The criminal is accused of at least seven murders committed during a span of 35 robberies, in Thrissur and Ernakulam districts.
