Thiruvananthapuram: Security has been tightened and surveillance stepped up on Kerala’s border with Tamil Nadu, sources say.

The steps were taken after Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest and is in critical condition in hospital in Chennai.

DGP Loknath Behera has ordered to tighten the security in all districts that share the border with Tamil Nadu, and in the popular Sabarimala temple. KSRTC buses that ply to Tamil Nadu have been rerouted.

Kerala Police beefed up forces in the bordering districts like Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Idukki and Palakkad.

The police also cordoned off certain areas in the famed Sabarimala temple, using ropes to ensure that no untoward incidents occur.

A huge number of pilgrims from Tamil Nadu were coming to the temple for the two-month-long festival season that got underway in November.

The popular tourist destination of Thekkady in Idukki district that borders Kambam of Theni district in Tamil Nadu, the route most taken from Tamil Nadu was also under close vigil.

Likewise at Munnar - another popular tourist and work destination of the Tamil people, was given extra security by the Kerala police.

Ever since reports surfaced Sunday that Jayalalithaa's condition deteriorated, Kerala authorities were monitoring the situation as things could get out of hand due to emotional outburst.

Karnataka has also strengthened security in the state’s border districts with Tamil Nadu.

Jayalalithaa suffered from a cardiac arrest Sunday evening and is being treated by a team of specialists at Apollo Hospitals.
