Kottayam: At a time when the CPM and its feeder organizations are making tall claims about championing students' rights, reports from Mahathma Gandhi University tell a different story.

In yet another incident of SFI's high-handedness on campuses, a dalit research scholar on MG University has alleged that he was brutally manhandled by the activists of the CPM's student wing.

His crime: he took initiative to organize a meet on transgender rights.

Vivek Kumaran, an MPhil scholar of the School of Gandhian Thoughts and a native of Kalady, who suffered grievous injuries in the attack, is undergoing treatment at Kottayam Medical College Hospital. Vivek is an activist belonging to the Ambedkar Students Movement. It is alleged that a gang of SFI workers barged into his hostel room the other day and assaulted him. Reports said that the SFI workers hurled casteist slurs on Vivek.

Vivek, who fell unconscious after the attack, was rushed to hospital by his hostel mates.

The police have registered a case against four SFI members after Vivek filed a complaint. SFI unit secretary Arun, Shyamlal, Sachu Sadanandan and Hemand have been booked by Gandhi Nagar police.

Meanwhile, three SFI workers have filed a complaint with the police that they were manhandled on the campus.
