Kochi: CPM leaders P. Jayarajan and T.V. Rajesh were named as accused in the CBI FIR into the murder of Abdul Shukkoor. The central agency has retained all 33 accused named by the Kannur police in its chargesheet.

The CBI report was submitted before the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The investigation is led by CBI Thiruvananthapuram unite SP Jose Mohanan.

Shukkoor (21), a worker of the Muslim League at Ariyil near Taliparamba, was hacked to death on February 20, 2012, apparently to avenge an earlier attack on CPM district secretary Jayarajan and legislator Rajesh.

Shukkoor and his friends were taking a friend to hospital when they were ambushed by a group of people. Shukkoor’s friend, P. Sacharia, who was also stabbed, gave the decisive testimony in the case.

The attack happened less than three hours of an attack on the car in which the CPM leaders were travelling through Ariyil.

Jayarajan and Rajesh were accused of hatching a conspiracy that led the murder and were made the 32nd and 33rd accused in the case. A charge sheet was filed on August 24, 2012.

The state government referred the cast to the CBI on December 18, 2013, a decision challenged by Rajesh as politically motivated. The High Court of Kerala stayed the proceedings in the Thalassery court after Rajesh and Jayarajan challenged their inclusion as accused. The high court later ordered a CBI probe after Shukkoor’s mother petitioned the court.

Two of the accused are still absconding while another one died.
