Vaisakh (inset)Cheruthoni (Idukki): The Idukki police Sunday arrested a young priest on the charge of raping a 70-year-old temple employee.
The arrested was identified as Vaisakh, 20, of Pallikkattil, Madukka, near Mundakayam in Kottayam district.
The incident occurred last week when Vaisakh arrived at the temple to perform poojas in the absence of the head priest.
The elderly woman was under severe trauma following the assault. On Saturday morning, she went to the Idukki District Hospital and revealed the incident to the doctors, who, in turn, informed the police. A female police officer recorded the victim’s statement and handed it over to the Idukki circle inspector.
The accused was arrested from his house in Madukka in the early hours of Sunday by a police team led by Idukki CI Sibichan Joseph.
He was produced before a local court which remanded him for fourteen days.
