Thiruvananthapuram: The Rs 9,400-crore trans-grid 2.0 project, aimed at enhancing transmission capacity for bringing power from outside the State, was accorded sanction by the director board of the Kerala State Electricity Board Limited (KSEB), Monday.

The trans-grid project would be implemented to tap the full potential of the 8,000-mw Raigarh-Pugalur-Madakkathara mega power transmission project, which is expected to be commissioned in 2019.

The first phase of the project is estimated to cost Rs 4,745.77 crore. It would cover laying of 400/220 multi-circuit, multi-voltage line between Madakkathara 400-kV substation and Areekode 400-kV substation.

Moreover, 400-kV Substations would be constructed at Mailatty in Kasaragod, Wayanad, Edamon, Kottayam, Kollam, and Kundara as part of the trans-grid project. As many as 26 220-kV substations, including those at Neeleswaram, Kunnamangalam, Thalassery, and Kakkayam, would also be established.

A decision has also been taken to form a Kannur-based office of the Chief Engineer (Distribution) by bifurcating the sections under the Northern region to improve the power distribution system. The existing southern, central and northern regions will be known as Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Kannur regions henceforth.

The Board also accorded administrative sanction for construction of section offices (Distribution) in Kachani, Pappanamkode, Poozhikkunnu, Ranni-Perunad, Vallikkunnam, Meenadam, Mulanthuruthy, Edakochi, Edathala, Nellikuzhi, Manjalloor, Udumbanchola, Lakkidi-Kattupatha, Kooroppada, Kayaradi, Kumbidi, Vilayoor, Mambad, Puzhakattiri, Mundakulam, Tuvvur, Indianoor, Peringathoor, Cherupuzha, Vallithodu, Seethankolli, Koombara, and Venmani.

Administrative sanction was also given for constructing a 33/220-kV substation for transmitting the power generated at the 100-MW solar project at Ambalathara in Kasaragod and for laying a 220-k-V double circuit line linking the Kanithode-Mylatti line.

The director board also approved the Rs 45-crore proposal to lay a 12-km long 220-kV multiple circuit line as part of upgrading the 110-kV substation at Chalakudy to a 220-kV facility.

Under the Ernad line package, the existing Madakkathara-Areekode 220-kV single circuit line will be upgraded to 400/220-kV multi-circuit multi-voltage line. The Kizhisseri-Nallalam 110-kV line will be upgraded to 220-kV capacity. The estimated cost of both the projects, that were given administrative sanction, is Rs 521 crore.

The board has also cleared the special Puncha package, which envisages improved power distribution at the rice growing regions under the 17 sections of the Kottayam circle. Of the estimated cost of Rs 22.69 crore, the KSEB would bear Rs 19.46 crore. The existing equipment and materials, which will be replaced with new ones, would be valued at 1.85 crore and the amount would be utlised to the fund the project, the officials said.

Administrative sanction was also given to the proposal to divide the Perumbavoor electrical division under the Perumabvoor Circle to establish a new electrical division headquartered at Angamaly.
