What is Panama Papers leak?

A massive leak of 11.5 million tax documents exposed the secret offshore dealings of Indians including Amitabh Bachchan, aides to Russian president Vladimir Putin, world leaders and celebrities such as Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.

The Indian connection

Names of 500 Indians featured in the list including that of Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, industrialist Gautam Adani's brother Vinod Adani and DLF owner KP Singh, the Indian Express has reported.

Who did it?

An investigation into the documents by more than 100 media groups, including The Indian Express, revealed the hidden offshore dealings in the assets.

The vast stash of records was obtained from an anonymous source by German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and shared with media worldwide by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

It was not immediately clear who was the original source of the leaked documents.

What is Mossack Fonseca?

A Panama-based law firm, which is at the center of the data leak scandal, with offices in more than 35 countries. Mossack Fonseca, allegedly helped major politicians and celebrities around the world hide assets from tax authorities.

How much data has been leaked?

The leaked data, covering 1975 to the end of last year, provides what the ICIJ described as a "never-before-seen view inside the offshore world". About 11.5 million documents and 2.6 terabytes of information was reportedly drawn from the firm’s internal database.

What was Mossack Fonseca's reaction to the leak?

"This is a crime, a felony," Ramon Fonseca, one of the founders of the Panamanian firm Mossack Fonseca said.
