New Delhi: The justice (retd.) AK Roopanwal Commission, set up to probe the death of Hyderabad Central University scholar Rohith Vemula, in its report submitted to the HRD Ministry has said that he was not a dalit, reported a national daily.
The one-member commission in its report has stated that the 26-year-old scholar did not belong to the Scheduled Caste Community, the daily said quoting UGC sources. However, Onmanorama was not able to independently confirm this report.
Top officials in the HRD Ministry, when contacted by PTI, refused to divulge any details.
HRD minister Prakash Javadekar also said that the report has not reached him yet.
The Roopanwal Commission had been formed by the HRD Ministry to look into the circumstances leading to the death of Vemula.
He had committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of a hostel room in the university.
The suicide by Vemula had triggered a huge political storm with opposition parties launching a massive attack on the union government over the issue. They also accused the university authorities of mishandling the situation, which led to Vemula's suicide.
The commission report has reportedly not put the blame on the senior varsity officials.
