Sharjah: At least 19 vehicles were gutted when a major fire engulfed a parking area of Sharjah University here on Sunday.
According to the authorities, the fire started at the parking slot reserved for women in the university. “One car caught fire and that spread to other areas soon,” brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, director-general of Sharjah Civil Defence, said.
Timely response of the Civil Defence officials helped to sustain the fire in the area it originated, without spreading to nearby cars, added brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi.
Lt. col Sami Khamees AL Naqbi, director of Civil Protection at Sharjah Civil Defence Department, told khaleejtimes.com that the fire started in one of the cars owing to some technical problems and heating, and spread to other cars due to strong wind and flammable materials of the car shades.
