Here's a look at some of the military coups in Turkey so far:

May 27, 1960: 38 Turkish military officers overthrew prime minister Adnan Menderes, who was executed. Soon after, general Cemal Gursel assumed power.

March 12, 1971: The Turkish military intervened after the country witnessed an inflation of nearly 80 percent. The military gave a memorandum to prime minister Suleyman Demirel to step down. Demirel resigned hours later.

September 12, 1980: Military officers announced that they are imposing martial law and dissolving the government. Turkish armed forces governed the nation for three years. Later, Kenan Evren was appointed president.

February 28, 1997: Military memorandum forced the resignation of Islamist prime minister Necmettin Erbakan. Mesut Yilmaz was appointed to form the new government.
